The Missing Piece In Prison Rehabilitation: Families Must Be Part Of The Conversation

Although strong family support is widely promoted as essential for prisoner rehabilitation, families receive little actual support—especially around the time of release. They carry heavy emotional and financial burdens, often without communication or resources from the prison system. Unseen Victims calls for systemic change, including better pre-release planning, emergency grants, mental health support, and consistent communication. If families are expected to play a key role in rehabilitation, they must be properly supported.

Unseen victims are calling for action and the implication of three major changes that would, beyond any doubt, reduce the potential for further reoffending. FAMILES matter so why aren’t they part of ministerial conversations?

Closed initiatives are bandied about in abundance. Therapy, mental health support, access to education, ROTL opportunities … I could go on … But where is the support for the Unseen victims in these situations? The ones who rocked up religiously for expensive visits, the ones who put money in accounts every week to enable canteen purchases and telephone calls, the ones who will be on the front line when the retuning citizens breezes back into their life???
