No one expects to find themselves supporting a loved one in prison, yet it can happen to anyone at any time, for any reason. Alongside the immense emotional strain, families face significant financial challenges that often go unnoticed. A recent report by Unseen Victims highlights the severe financial burden placed on families of prisoners, with visits costing an average of £3,000 annually.

This expense is especially harsh for families who have already lost a significant portion of their household income. Our survey reveals that 92% of respondents receive no government assistance to help cover these additional costs.

Adding to the financial strain, we ask the question, are prison visit halls often charge exorbitant prices for snacks, akin to “day out” prices. This practice is questionable, particularly given the Ministry of Justice’s emphasis on the importance of maintaining strong family bonds to reduce reoffending rates.

Our report only scratches the surface of this widespread issue. More detailed findings will follow, shedding light on the full extent of the financial hardships faced by families of prisoners.
